If I’m reading a ‘Best Sitcoms Of All Time’ list and Seinfeld isn’t on it I get seriously worried. Seinfeld is probably the first show I can remember watching as a child; forget the Teletubbies and Rugrats! The problem with my love for this show is that not many of my friends have seen it. They all watch nothing but ‘Friends’, which was great and all, but I will always say that Seinfeld deserves top-spot in the sitcom genre. Why? Here are some of my reasons:

The Plot

It’s about comedian Jerry Seinfeld (Jerry Seinfeld (!)) who hangs around with his loser best friend George Costanza (Jason Alexander), his ex-girlfriend Elaine Benes (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) and mad across-the-hall-neighbour Cosmo Kramer (Michael Richards). It’s ‘a show about nothing’. A lot of the story lines are based on real-life experiences of the writers, which makes it just that bit more funny and relatable. There is a ‘no hugging, no learning rule’ which means we don’t have forced learning experiences for the characters where they try and improve themselves and their morals. It’s not as cliché, it’s not as predictable, and to be honest it’s more fun to watch people make fools of themselves time and time again, not caring about the consequence.

The Main Characters

Jerry Seinfeld is a comedian who is a germaphobe, neat-freak and probably the most reasonable main character. Only he’s not that reasonable. Most of the show is set in his apartment, and most of his story lines revolve around his relationships and breaking up with a beautiful woman for the most ridiculous and minuscule reasons. Like having man hands. Or eating one pea at a time. Jerry is the glue that holds the main four characters tightly together.

George Costanza is the person I aim to be in life. Just kidding, everyone would hate to be George. He’s dishonest, angry, petty and cheap. He’s fat and balding and a chronic liar, but he is hilarious somehow manages to still get dates with gorgeous women despite his physical appearance. He plays the role of Jerry’s best friend and the guy we never want to be but love to laugh at.

Elaine Benes is Jerry’s ex who remains a good friend and is the only female in the main cast. She’s overly honest, assertive and often selfish, claiming that somebody just isn’t ‘sponge-worthy’. She’s an excellent dancer, (!!) as seen in the clip below, and is a genuinely funny female who stands on her own as a great comedic character. Oh and she hates the English Patient. She’s my kind of girl.

Finally, Cosmo Kramer, known simply as Kramer. He’s quirky, energetic and has a mad hair style. Nobody knows what he does for a living, where he gets his money from, or how he slides through the door that way. He’s the original hipster in his vintage clothes and somehow has a charm that makes everyone love him. He practically lives in Jerry’s apartment, and is longtime friends with the evil Newman.

The Minor Characters

Even the minor characters on this show are fantastic. Newman, The Costanzas, The Seinfelds, Uncle Leo, David Puddy, Bania, J Peterman, Tim Whatley (Our favourite Mr White) and Jackie Chiles. The list goes on, because they’re all just so memorable.

It’s Quotable

The sea was angry that day my friends, yada yada yada, soup nazi, not that there’s anything wrong with that, you double dipped the chip, happy festivus, these pretzels are making me thirsty, he’s a re-gifter, Vandelay Industries, she had man hands, but I don’t want to be a pirate. You get the picture.

For me, Seinfeld is my hands-down favourite comedy show. What’s yours?
